A River of Light

“I am not welcome. I will stay at my mother’s, imagining Christmas with my father. No one speaks of any of this; my troubles are an intrusion on family peace. I am stunned by the grief of loss, by the injustice. By the terrible, aching missing of my father” (117).

  1. This is an interesting quote that I picked up on too. I can't believe that Meredy's family would leave her alone with her baby on Christmas Day. Also, how would Meredy's troubles be an intrusion on the family peace? They should be working together to make this broken family whole again rather than avoiding the problem altogether. Her family should have comforted her and taken her in their car to her father's house. Insisted that she stay despite the awkwardness because it is Christmas time and family comes first. In the end, im glad she got up the courage to go by herself and speak to her father. I think she really did find comfort in the few words exchanged.

  2. I love that you picked this quote and I also agree with Mari. She is reaching for this love that no one is willing to even give her a piece of. Her family is supposed to be her support system and instead they just shoo her away. Almost like the way her father did to her mother. Her family treats her like she is fragile and toxic. They shame her for what happened so many years ago, but still call her family. When will they just give Meredith a break?
